If you want more value for your travel dollar (or sterling), there's probably no better destination than Asia. You will amazed at the kind of accommodations, food and entertainment you can get in Asia for a fraction of the price you would pay in Europe. Having said that, if you're traveling on a string budget, you might want to pick up some ideas from these 13 secrets to budget travel. Here are some of the tips offered, followed by some comments of my own:
- Be mentally ready – be realistic in your expectations and plan a holiday that suits your budget.
- Grocery shop – I do this all the time for drinks, snacks and toiletries! Why pay 5x more at the hotel or resort?
- Skip the bar – instead of the hotel bar, go to pub down the road. Or skip it entirely and simply enjoy your hotel's satellite tv
- Phone home – avoid roaming charges and use Skype instead.
- Money Exchange – shop around for the best exchange rates (definitely not the banks or hotels!)
- Included? – often travel packages turn out cheaper, but do the math before you book. I personally prefer buffet breakfasts though, rather than all meals included.
- Book early – or if your schedule is flexible, book last minute.
