Christmas Markets in Germany
Filed in archive Destination: Europe on November 8, 2006
Tired of all the commercialism which seems to surround Christmas-time? Why not head to nearby Germany and get that Christmas spirit in a more traditional way?
The Germans mark the beginning of Christmas with the opening of Christmas Markets (also called Weihnactsmarkt or Christkindlesmarkt) all over the country, in cities, towns and provinces.
In my opinion, it's the best time to visit the country.
"From big cities to small towns, the smell, sight and sounds of Christmas permeats the air. Stollen, lebkuchen, gluehwein, sausages and roasted sugar almonds will beckon your stomach while you listen to christmas carols and twinkling colored lights guide your way around the old city square."
The biggest (in size) is in Nuremberg. Book the Visit the Christ Child travel package for an experience you will never forget.
However, if you'd rather experience the smaller ones, check out Weihnachtsmarkt Deutschland (in German) for the lists of christmas market locations.
It's an experience you wouldn't want to miss.

Trier, North Germany, has a small but fantastically traditional Christmas market. Ideal for a short break leading up to Christmas as you can pop over the boarder to Luxemburg for a bit of city shopping too. Best to book independently as you can get really cheap flight, I flew for £0.99 3 years ago and find hotels to your suiting then. Also on a language front you can dip into French, German and English - Ideal!

Yes at least it does not look that commercial in Germany :-) But seriously the christmas markets are really nice: Especially Munich is known for it´s tradtion and markets http://www.fitforeurope.com/germany/munich/
Probably that´s why Munich is even more often visited by foreigners than Berlin and Hamburg.

The Christmas markets look fab. I have been meaning to visit for a long time .. must get round to it next year! If you book independently it seems to be much cheaper www.addmyproperty.com is a good website to find first class accommodation direct from the owner.
