Falkland Islands AKA as the Penguin Islands
Filed in archive Destination: South America by Karen Bryan on September 12, 2008
The Falkland Islands location in the South Atlantic Ocean makes them an ideal habitat for wildlife. There are two main islands, East and West Falkland. The Falklands are best know for their one million penguin population.

You can see five different species of penguins, King, Gentoo, Rockhopper, Magellanic and Macaroni. You can watch the Rockhoppers taking a shower in the fresh water to wash the salt from their coats. Late January is the best time to spot the chick nurseries. If you lie quietly on the beach the chances are that the a few curious Gentoos will come to investigate.

There's also a large population of Black Browed Albatross. You can also spot killer whales and elephant seals. The Falklands are said to have the best sea trout fishing in the world.
