"How green is my valley?" - very if you're in Austria

Filed in archive Destination: Europe on September 2, 2008

Austria doesn't seem to have been jumping on the green wagon in selling itself as a "green" tourist destination when the country has been performing well in to the eco friendly tables with more than 70% of it's energy coming from renewable sources and 60% of waste recycled.

The Rogner Bad Blumau uses no fossil fuels for heating even in Winter as the hot thermal springs provide all the warm required. The restaurant serves locally produced food. The Spa Hotel was designed by the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

The less luxurious green option is Austrian mountain huts, with sixty being awarded the seal of approval for being energy efficient by the Austrian Alpine Association.

So if you'd prefer your trip to have less of an effect on the environment. Austria sounds like a good choice, especially if you don't fly there.
