Two different pieces surfaced last week on the safety of Mexico as a tourist destination – one in Fodor’s and on at CNN.
Fodor’s points out that the superficial image of Mexico as littered with Swine Flu and drug violence is, well, superficial. It’s not a very complete picture. Fodor’s conslusion: How safe Mexico is depends on where you go and how you travel.
The CNN story is focused on Mexico’s Baja region – where cities like Tijuana and Las Playas Rosarito are great tourist destinations (or were in the past at least) where drug violence has been in the news a lot. Authorities there have designated a 50-mile tourist corridor where police will step up patrols in an effort to make the tourist spots safer. We’ll see how well that works…
