If you're looking for a little sun and sand to replace the wind and snow of Winter, Madeira is a nice get-a-way spot.
The island of Madeira is an autonomous part of Portugal, a little north of the Canary Islands, off the coast of Morocco. It's a little over 800 square kilometers and has a population of just under 250,000. The main city, Funchal, has around 100,000 residents.
While the island has a lot to offer if you enjoy nature or history, it's quite possible to spend your entire visit laying on the beach...

i wouldn't recommend madeira as a beach holiday - it only has one and that's an artificial one.
