Montreal has positioned itself as one the gay capitals of the world over the last ten years, declaring that "we love it that you're totally out there", as part of their marketing campaign to appeal to the 10% of international tourists who are gay or lesbian.

The Village is known as one of the largest and safest gayborhoods in North America. The highlight of the gay calendar is the Gay Pride Festival held between 30 July to 3 August 2008.
