Skyros Half Marathon
Filed in archive competitions , Destination: Europe , Events by Karen Bryan on September 3, 2008
If watching the Olympics in Bejing has encouraged you to get into the fitness groove, there's still time to enter the Half Marathon on the Greek island of Skyros, taking place on Saturday 13 September 2008. Runners will get some great views as they ascend from Atsitsa Bay up towards the forested hills. The event has been running since 1987. Entrants comprise of tourists, islanders and Greeks from the mainland. You can find out more by emailing office@skyros.com or calling +44 (0)1983 865566 for more information.

Skyros is one of the Sporades Islands, which include the better known Skopelos and Skiathos but as the furthest east from the Greek mainland Skyros is more difficult to reach. It's home to the endangered Skyros pony a small pony which lives semi wild on the island. The island is still relatively undeveloped for tourism with only around 1000 tourist beds available, so I'm not sure where all the Half Marathon participants and spectators will be accommodated, maybe a temporary camping settlement?
