The three bridges of Berwick upon Tweed
Filed in archive Destination: UK + Ireland on June 27, 2008
I've lived in Berwick upon Tweed in the north east of England for the last two years. It lies 3 miles from the border with Scotland. Although Berwick is now part of England it changed hands between the Scotland and England thirteen times between the 12th and 15th century, finally settling in England in 1482.

Berwick has three bridges spanning the River Tweed, the Old Bridge (at the front of the photo) which dates from the early 17th century, the Royal Tweed road bridge (behind the Old Bridge) built in the 1920s and the Royal Border railway bridge (at the rear of the photo) constructed in the 1840s.

The photo above is the view of the Royal Border Bridge from my office window. The Royal Border Bridge is part of the UK East Coast main railway line and only required repair work in the 1990s, a testament to Victorian engineering and construction.
Berwick makes a great short break destination as it's easy to reach by rail, taking around 4 hours from London or under an hour from Edinburgh and Newcastle.
