If you're looking for cheap rail tickets the Trainline.com Best Fare Finder is pretty good but only if you are planning to travel on a popular route. The lowest prices are available if you are flexible about your date and time of travel. There were fares like £13 advance single from Newcastle to London. However that's also it's downfall because you are restricted to searching for cheap tickets to and from specific stations, so I was unable to enter my local station of Berwick upon Tweed when trying to find a cheap return ticket to London in November.
