Avis, the biggest car rental company, and the first car rental company to start a blog, www.wetryharder.co.uk, now offers Tom Tom One Europe, available to rent at several Avis branches in the UK.
Tom Tom units are available in Avis' branches in Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansfeld, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Bristol airport location and Mayfair in Central London.
Instead of driving in circles and wasting precious pounds on gasoline, rent the Tom Toms for just GBP 8/day for the first 7 days, and free for the succeeding days.
*Pre-booking of Tom Toms is still in the process, so simply ask at the Avis counter in the specified branches when collecting the car.

I have read mixed reviews about sat nav, so I’m not sure what to believe. However it can be very daunting when you pick up your hire car and set out in a strange city. I find there’s no substitute for careful preparation. Buy a decent road map and write down you route plan with road numbers and all towns along your route. Sometimes signs will only give road numbers, sometimes town/city names, not necessarily the main destination. I live in the UK, which I think has, on the whole very frequent, large and comprehensive road signs.

You can hire the latest TomTom satellite navigation equipment from Auto Europe too, from £32.47 per week. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re visiting a new place and aren’t certain of the route – it’ll take the stress out of the journey. You can order them online at http://www.auto-europe.co.uk/travel-extras/index.cfm
