Much as we would like to blend in with the locals, the things that we need -- camera, maps, guidebooks -- and our outfits give us away as tourists. This makes us easy targets for pickpockets and/or any other person with unscrupulous intent.

So when traveling -- especially those who are doing it solo -- it always best to pay special attention when in crowded and/or dark places. Try to keep these travel safety tips (1 and 2) in mind.

Another great tip that I have recently found is to carry an umbrella. Not only would it be of great use if and when the weather turns bad but it could also be used as a great weapon when you are "attacked under unequal conditions".
